Pearnel Charles Jr
Pearnel Charles Jr, who is to be the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) candidate in Clarendon South East in the next general election, says despite being new to the constituency, he is confident that he can win the seat.
The seat became vacant on Tuesday following the resignation of Rudyard Spencer.
The Government has announced a March 2 by election.
Mr. Charles says being new to the constituency presents many opportunities.
"I believe that being new also means that I bring a fresh new voice, new vision and a new opportunity to develop stronger ties in that constituency and the surrounding areas. There's going to be enormous development in the Clarendon belt and South East Clarendon will not get left behind," he declared.
He said he will have the help of Mr. Spencer during his campaign.
Mr. Charles, who was speaking Thursday on the Morning Agenda on Power 106, explained that he was approached by Mr. Spencer about three years ago to begin preparing him to take over the constituency.
Mr. Charles says he did not have an interest at the time.
He took umbrage with suggestions that his placement in Clarendon South East was to quell a power struggle for the Clarendon North Central seat with Senator Robert Morgan.
"There is a position that the Jamaica Labour Party has taken now for me to serve as the candidate for South East Clarendon and that is one that has caused no disruption in our party. Most of the persons speaking about this, if not all, are outside, they are not members of the Jamaica Labour Party. There is no problem in JLP other than persons who are trying to distract," he asserted.
