Police kill gunman in shootout on Sir Florizel Glasspole Highway

There were chaotic scenes along the Sir Florizel Glasspole Highway in East Kingston this afternoon after the police and gunmen traded bullets along the busy thoroughfare.

Two of the suspects were shot, one fatally.

The other has been placed under police guard in hospital.

Investigators say an illegal gun was seized in the incident.

According to the police, they received reports that men were robbing pedestrians along the stretch of road.

Sometime after midday, a police quick response team intercepted four men on two motorcycles along the thoroughfare in the vicinity of the Caribbean Cement company.

This led to an exchange of gunfire, forcing passing motorists to take evasive action.

One of the gunmen is said to have jumped into the sea in an effort to escape, but he was held by the police.

The other two men fled.

The shooting caused a traffic jam along the road, causing headache for persons travelling to eastern Jamaica and those trying to catch flights at Norman Manley International Airport.

Motorists travelling along Harbour Street and Windward Road were still experiencing major delays on Friday evening.
