The Kingston Western Police say a feud between extortionists over control of the Kingston Public Hospital (KPH) car park led to Thursday's shooting incident on the compound of the institution.

Senior Superintendent Michael Phipps, head of the Kingston Western Police, told Radio Jamaica News that a conflict between the Taliban gang, based on Luke Lane, and the Cuban gang has led to several shootings near the car park.

SSP Phipps said the police are searching for the men involved in Thursday's shooting and will maintain a strong presence in the area.

There were chaotic scenes on the hospital compound Thursday afternoon following an exchange of gunfire between armed thugs and a policeman.

The policeman challenged the gunmen who had attacked a businessman in the KPH car park.

An ambulance was damaged by bullets in the incident.

Suspect charged for March shooting

A suspect who was held in connection with the fatal shooting of a man at the KPH car park last month, has been charged.

Conrad Bernard, 33, otherwise called "Bappie", was charged on Thursday for the murder of 23-year-old Javaughn Brown, of Pink Lane.

He was also charged with illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

The Kingston Western Police reported that on March 21, Mr. Brown was in the vicinity of the KPH car park at the intersection of Orange and North Streets when he was attacked and shot.

Investigators say Mr. Brown was killed as part of the ongoing dispute by extortionists who control the car park.
