Policeman acquitted of assault charge

A policeman who was accused of assaulting a bus operator during a traffic stop was acquitted on Wednesday when he appeared in the St Mary Parish Court.

Constable Lival Bonner was freed after the judge accepted no-case submissions from his attorney Oswest Senior Smith.

Mr. Bonner was charged in 2016 by INDECOM (Independent Commission of Investigations) following allegations that he assaulted the complainant, Aleon Harrison, during a traffic stop.

Mr Harrison filed a report with INDECOM and this led to the policeman's arrest.

During no-case submissions, Mr Senior-Smith noted that Mr Harrison was sentenced to six months in prison last year for attacking the policeman. He was released in January.

Mr Senior Smith argued that his client was performing his duty as a police officer when Mr Harrison disobeyed his instructions.
