Political commentator Dr. Paul Ashley is predicting that the date for the general election will be announced this weekend when the Jamaica Labour Party's Central Executive is scheduled to meet in Montego Bay, St. James.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness, wearing Clarks Desert boots, on Tuesday gave the country a signal that the election announcement is imminent during a visit to the constituency of Clarendon North Central.
Mr. Holness had stated in January that his selection of shoes would be an indication of an election announcement.
Speaking with Radio Jamaica News on Wednesday, Dr. Ashley outlined his expectation for this weekend, while at the same time reiterating the call for a fixed election date.
"I expect the call to be made on Sunday. But let me say, we must stop the gigantic foolishness of watching what a Prime Minister chooses to wear before we decide to plan for an election date. I think it's high time now that we remove this discretionary practice...and have fixed election dates, so the whole economy can be planned and people can plan their business. But we can't continue with this discretionary practice. Soon will be dying canerow hairstyles or if my tattoo is itching," he criticised.
In the meantime, political commentator Shalman Scott has outlined three factors which he says are working against an early election.
Mr. Scott said corruption allegations, the COVID-19 pandemic and the deterioration of the economy are issues that must be weighed by the Government. He argued that the convergence of all these factors "would suggest an election that should be called later than earlier."
"But there is a date to watch also, and it is the 30th of October of this year, "he said. "Why it is of significance is that in the history of the Jamaica Labour Party, the largest victory that the party has had and also any government in power has had since we have had Universal Adult Suffrage, is October 30, 1980 general election."
