Portmore bus operators ordered to use transport centre

The Highway and Traffic Division and the Island Traffic Authority, on Tuesday carried out an operation at Bayside in Portmore, St. Catherine targeting mini-bus operators.

The police say the operators, who ply the Bayside to Spanish Town route, have been refusing to use the nearby Naggo Head Transportation Centre.

A bus was seized after the driver was found to be operating contrary to his road licence. Some of the drivers were also ticketed for various offences.

Acting Senior Superintendent Courtney Coubrie, head of the Highway and Traffic Division, said the operation followed numerous complaints.

"With the reopening of the new school term...we would want for everything to be very orderly and students to know exactly where to take their public transport at the terminus," he said.

"We have been further advised as well, that operators of these vehicles have been eliminating their waste in areas that are not provided - at the transportation centre, public sanitary convenience is provided for the use of everyone," he continued.

He said the bus operators have been ordered to move from the area and use the transportation centre.
