Christopher Zacca, Chairman of the Private Sector Vaccine Initiative Oversight Committee, has given details on the mechanism that will be used to assist the government in distributing COVID-19 vaccines.
He is also denying that the arrangements are to secure the vaccines on a preferential basis for members of the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica.
Mr. Zacca was responding to questions on Wednesday which arose based on the vaccination plan presented by the Health Ministry.
He explained that the role of the committee is to facilitate efficiency and ensure that the vaccination process is as smooth as possible.
As part of this process, the private sector has set up a logistics committee that has already started working with the health ministry to facilitate the acquisition of software and tablets for data entry. In addition, geomapping is being done to identify possible vaccination centres across the country, as well as to locate the sick and elderly.
Mr. Zacca insisted that "not one" vaccine will be distributed to the private sector outside of the priority table outlined by the government.
He said the money to purchase the vaccines will come from contributors to a private sector fund.
"We're gonna purchase [vaccines] at the cost, distribute them not through our companies but through the private pharmaceutical network who will need to have their cost covered for storage and distribution; and that price is what we're gonna charge our member firms," he explained.
