Jamaica reported a record 328 new COVID-19 infections on Friday, eclipsing the previous day's 263 cases, which was also an unprecedented increase, up to that point.
The Corporate Area (Kingston & St. Andrew) registered 70 of the new infections and St. James, 53. Manchester followed with 49 while St. Catherine reported 43.
Six other parishes recorded double-digit increases: St. Elizabeth, 24; Trelawny, 23, Hanover, 21, Clarendon, 15, and St. Mary and St. Ann, 10 each.
Positivity rate
The Ministry of Health & Wellness, commenting on the latest statistics, said the 328 positive cases represent a positivity rate of 15.7 percent.
Chief medical officer Dr Jacqueline Bisasor-McKenzie said there has been an increase in the number of social gatherings across the country, especially in the Corporate Area. She's warning that these events will increase exposure and infections.
According to her, the younger population who attend the events are spreading the virus to older and more vulnerable persons, leading to an increase in hospitalisations and severe illness.
In addition, Dr Bisasor McKenzie said the increase in the number of cases in the 20-to-39 age group continues to drive the infection rate, putting the entire population at risk for more restrictive measures.
