Regional economists urge Caribb'n countries to collaborate on COVID-19 vaccines purchases

Two regional economists have advised Caribbean countries to join forces to buy about 20 million COVID-19 vaccines, or the pandemic will continue to devastate lives and economies for another two years.

Former director of economics at the Caribbean Development Bank, Justin Ram and co-founder of medl, Kiran Mathur Mohammed, say this is the only way out of the current cycle of lockdowns and fear.

The economists suggest regional countries, with a total annual GDP of about US$91.5 billion could afford to do this.

They noted while allocating the cost for each country based on population size might seem the fairest approach, that would leave CARICOM's poorest nation, Haiti with the largest bill of about US$652 million since it has the biggest population.
