Scotiabank staff uneasy amid restructuring plans

BITU President Kavan Gayle

There are reports of unease among employees of Scotiabank Jamaica following a notification issued on Thursday morning of an impending restructuring exercise.

Kavan Gayle, President of the Bustamante Industrial Trade Union (BITU), says the global communication indicated that the restructuring will result in changes to some branches and the consolidation of another.

He said the workers are uneasy because the new information has "come on the heels of other restructuring that would have made positions redundant within that organisation".

Mr. Gayle said the union has requested "an urgent meeting" with the bank to discuss the possible changes and it is awaiting a response.

He said the staff members are also frustrated by the delay in the start of  wage and fringe benefits negotiations.

Earlier this year, Scotiabank closed some of its rural branches and transformed six branches into digital operations.
