Security guards promise more protests

Randolph Stewart, Public Relations Officer at the Jamaica Association for Private Security, and the Association's General Secretary, Kevan Ashley, speaking Monday on Beyond the Headlines

Following Monday's protest, agitation has increased among security guards who are threatening that more protest action is likely.

Randolph Stewart, Public Relations Officer at the Jamaica Association for Private Security, who spoke on Radio Jamaica's Beyond the Headlines, revealed that his group was acting on legal advice and another round of protest could be soon.

Security guards from several private security companies protested on Monday in Cross Roads St Andrew over what they believe is an unwarranted delay in the upgrade of their employment status.

This upgrade was expected following the Supreme Court ruling against Marksman Limited, in which the court ruled that the security guards were not independent contractors, but employees.

Kevan Ashley, General Secretary of Association warned that Mondays protest was just a "warm-up" for further action if their voices are not heeded.

While insisting on the right of the security guards to press their case, Mr Stewart said they were bracing for a backlash arising from Monday's protest.
