Severe weather alert issued for Jamaica as tropical wave threatens

The Meteorological Service has issued a severe weather alert for Jamaica.

In its bulletin at 5 o'clock Wednesday evening, the Met Service said a strong tropical wave is producing an area of disturbed weather east of the southern Windward Islands and is about to enter the southern Caribbean Sea.

The Wave is showing signs of developing into a tropical depression over the next few days.

The Met Service says there is an increasing threat of severe weather to Jamaica as the system moves closer to the island and over its territorial waters by Saturday morning.

It is also likely that it would be a tropical cyclone at that time.

Fishers on the cays and banks are being urged to complete their preparations and be on the alert to evacuate.

The Met Service will issue another bulletin on the system at 11 p.m.
