Psychologist Dr Leahcim Semaj believes the urge for persons to capture incidents for social media has led to escalation of  some violent events.

Dr. Semaj was commenting on Friday's fatal beating of  62-year-old Chieftain Campbell in Mandeville, Manchester by a mob which accused him of  stealing money.

Dr. Semaj, speaking Sunday on Radio Jamaica's That's a Rap, observed that during such incidents of  crowd behaviour, people feel a sense of diminished responsibility in carrying out their actions, while others tend not to do anything to stop it.

He said the advent of  social media has made this even worse.

And Dr. Semaj says he believes many of  those who participated in last week's incident are already regretting it.

He's urging that a comprehensive programe of social intervention be pursued, using media and other channels to promote pro-social behaviour.
