Some teachers still without March salary

JTA President LaSonja Harrison
The Ministry of Education and Youth says public sector teachers have started receiving their March salaries and retroactive amounts.

Payment was delayed by a number of days as the Ministry of Education and Youth and the Ministry of Finance and the Public Service worked through the process of accurately converting, approving and uploading the retroactive amounts and new salary rates.

The Education Ministry says it's also working with the Accountant General's Department and the commercial banks to ensure any glitches are resolved.

But president of the Jamaica Teachers' Association LaSonja Harrison told Radio Jamaica News that a signification number of teachers are yet to be paid.

Mrs Harrison explained that some schools have been assisting their teachers with the payment of bills. Still, she said others are not able to do this, so those teachers' monthly obligations are falling into arrears.

Radio Jamaica News spoke with a teacher at a corporate area school who said some teachers who have not yet been paid, have opted to stay home.

The JTA president said this approach by the teachers is understandable.
