Spanish Town Municipal Corporation clears some drains of debris

Mayor Norman Scott

Spanish Town Mayor Norman Scott says plastic bottles and other debris were cleared from drains along Burke Road and Oxford Road on Sunday.

Those drains had been cited as the source of major flooding during the passage of Tropical Storm Ian.

Mr. Scott says the road surface from the Spanish Town Police Station was damaged in the flood, which he blamed on poor garbage disposal practices and collection.

The garbage was removed from the drains with the help of the Jamaica Fire Brigade and a vacujet.

Impressed with the work of the vacujet, the mayor said he would speak with the Local Government Minister for the municipal corporation to acquire its own.

He noted that this "would make a big difference as it relates to clearing these drains".

Mr. Scott said a meeting is to be held this week with the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) about the inconsistent garbage collection in St. Catherine, which he said is at a chronic level.
