Hundreds of persons have turned up at the Tacky High School in St Mary to assist with repairs as part of Jamaica's National Labour Day activities. The administrative block was earlier this month destroyed by fire started by robbers.
Principal Errol Bascoe told RJR News that repairs were progressing well despite the inclement weather. He estimated that about 400 persons from several parishes and institutions have come to assist the school.
Maggotty Police Station
Meanwhjile, several organizations, led by the St. Elizabeth Parish Council, have started repairs to the Maggotty Police Station. The 100 year old station is the parish project for Labour Day.
Mayor Everton Fisher, Chairman of the Council, declared that the conditions under which the police work are less than satisfactory. He said, despite the work being done, more is needed to significantly improve conditions at the station.
Among other deficiencies, male and female officers are currently obliged to share one bathroom. One of the abandoned cells will be converted into a bathroom for female members.
Additional work being done on the station include replacing rails at the entrance and repairs to a section of the floor.
National Project
The National Labour Day Project is the Portmore Climate Change Park.
Fifteen police stations are parish projects.
