Teachers to receive outstanding salaries today, says Education Minister

Fayval Williams
By Kimone Witter

Minister of Education Fayval Williams is seeking to assure the majority of teachers that they should be receiving their salaries today.

Mrs Williams says most of the almost 25,000 teachers were not paid last week due to a necessary updating of the system to facilitate the payment of retroactive salaries.

The majority of teachers signed the new wage agreement on March 13.

The Education Minister said work to ensure the early payment of salaries started immediately after, but this was unfortunately not achieved.

Still, she said teachers who get paid directly by the Ministry can expect to see the payments in their accounts today, while bursar-paid schools should also be receiving their subvention for the payment of those teachers.

Mrs Williams said about 1,000 teachers "for whom errors were spotted" will have to wait a while longer to get their salaries. She said work is ongoing to correct the errors so they can be paid at the soonest possible time.
