UK campaigners appealing against deportation of autistic Jamaican

Campaigners gathered in Birmingham city centre in the UK on Saturday to protest against the deportation of a severely autistic man to Jamaica.

Osime Brown, 22, could be flown to the island after being released early from a five-year jail sentence for a phone robbery conviction.

According to his mother however, after migrating to the UK as a small child, he has no family network or knowledge of  Jamaica.

Mr. Brown's family claimed he was abused in prison and fear his disabilities will lead to him being victimised if the deportation goes ahead.

A letter signed by more than 100 influential names has been sent to the Home Secretary calling for a reversal of the decision.

Mr. Brown's mother, Joan Martin, is expecting an answer by June 15.

Rallying awareness and support for the cause, campaigners took to the streets in Victoria Square on Saturday.

A petition to allow Osime to stay in the UK has attracted 408,000 signatures. More than 50 MPs have also voiced their concern.

Mr. Brown was released from prison six months ago and awaits a decision by the Home Office.
