Warren Newby, a former senator, looks set to run on the Jamaica Labour Party's ticket in the upcoming parliamentary general election after securing victory in the tightly contested internal triple header contest for Clarendon, North West.
Mr Newby finished ahead of attorney, Corey Dunkley and educator Dr Clovis Nelson.
The former senator secured 68 per cent of the votes, while Mr Dunkley walked away with 30 per cent.
Dr. Nelson received the remainder of the votes.
Dr. Andrew Wheatley, JLP Deputy General Secretary and Director of Elections for the internal contest, reported that 550 delegates participated in the exercise.
He added that, as the JLP secures its candidate, the party must unite if it intends to keep North West Clarendon in the win column.
Mr Newby was heavily backed by JLP councillors in the constituency who hailed him as the preferred successor to outgoing standard bearer, Phillip Henriques.
Mr Henriques announced that he will not contesting the upcoming general election, due by September.
The first time MP faced heavy criticism over his stewardship by constituents following his 2020 victory.
