Kadiesh Fletcher, Acting Director of Communication at the Court Administration Division
With more staff members at the Westmoreland Parish Court falling ill from COVID-19, operations have been halted until further notice.
The St. James Parish Court has also been closed for one week.
Court Administration Division (CAD) says a number of employees at both locations have tested positive for the coronavirus and there are insufficient staff members to man the courts.
Kadiesh Fletcher, Acting Director of Communication at the CAD, says the the Westmoreland court will be closed this week, after which the Court Administration Division will "make a determination on the way forward for next week."
Leonard Green, President of the Advocates' Association of Jamaica, has said there will be repercussions from the disruption at courts in western Jamaica.
Mr. Green said there needs to be a re-think of measures to keep courts operating.
But Mrs Fletcher said the closure of the two courts should not cause a major disruption for clients.
"The court list for the month of August was organised in such a way that it will allow the courts to recover quickly from a disruption like this," she noted, adding that "August is considered the legal vacation, and as such, the court list would not have been very heavy."
