Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley kept the opposition guessing yesterday as to when he would name the date for the local government election.
The Opposition has been insisting that Dr Rowley announce the date in light of the recent Privy Council ruling that the extension of the life of local government bodies last December by one year was unlawful.
In a statement to Parliament, Dr Rowley said that following the May 18 decision, the government is duty-bound to call an election in accordance with the statutory procedure prescribed in the Act and the Representation of the People Act.
Dr. Rowley said the Deputy Chief Parliamentary Counsel is drafting the necessary legislation to validate all acts of the corporations from December 2022 up to May 18, 2023.
The Bill will be laid in Parliament on Monday and taken through all its stages.
The date for the local government election will thereafter be announced and held within three months.
Opposition Leader Kamla Persad Bissessar had threatened to take legal action against Prime Minister Rowley should he fail to call the local government election.
