14 year old Munro prodigy could force future "Champs" rule changes

Report by RJRGLEANER Communications Group Sports Reporter Jeremain Brown

14 year old shot put and discus phenom Jevontae Smith of Munro College, could lead to changes to the events and competitions rules at future ISSA Boys and Girls Championships. Smith will be watching from the stands when the 5 day event gets underway on March 28.

This is because of ISSA rules which do not allow the throws events for Class 3 boys or allow Class 3 boys to compete with older age groups at champs.

Recently, he threw 15.38 metres to win the Under-17 boys shot put and registered 45.95 metres for second in the discus at the recent Carifta Trials. He was the youngest in the field for both events.

Smith is also the Western Champs Class 3 double record holder. ISSA president Keith Wellington describes Smith's case as an anomaly, but notes a review of the Champs Class 3 boys rules might be on the cards.
