Jamaican swimming legend Alia Atkinson has been elected as the chairperson of the inaugural Athletes Committee of world aquatics' governing body FINA.
Atkinson was announced after a ceremony on the sidelines of the 19th FINA World Championships in Budapest, Hungary on Wednesday.
Atkinson called the development a significant step forward for both FINA and aquatics athletes and said the committee will act as a critical link between athletes and aquatics world governing body.
Aquatic Sports Association of Jamaica (ASAJ) president Martin Lyn says the 3 time national Sportswoman of the Year is a perfect fit for the role.
Atkinson will have Great Britain's Jack Laugher as her vice chair for the term which runs until 2026.
