Lewis guides Windies to victory over England in first ODI

Evin Lewis fell agonizingly short of a second consecutive One Day International (ODI) century, as the West Indies crushed England by 8 wickets via DLS Method in their rain-affected opening encounter at the Siv Viv Richards Ground in Antigua on Thursday night to take a 1-0 lead in the three game series.

Set a revised target of 157 off 35 overs to win , the Caribbean side cantered to their target in 25.5 overs. They were led by a solid century opening partnership of 118 between Player of the Match Lewis and Jamaica's Brandon King.

Lewis smashed 94 from 69 balls, including 8 sixes and 5 fours,  while King added 30 off 54 balls with 3 fours to  lay the foundation for the comprehensive win.

Keacy Carty 19 not out, and captain Shai Hope with an unbeaten 6, applied the finishing touches to  the comfortable victory.

Earlier, England who were sent to bat, posted a modest 209 all out in 45.1 overs. Gudakesh Motie led the bowling for the Caribbean team with 4-41.

There were two wickets each for Matthew Forde, Jayden Seales and Alzarri Joseph. Stand-in captain Liam Livingstone top scored with 48 for England. He was supported by Sam Curran who made 37 and Jacob Bethell 27.

The second game will be played at the same venue on Saturday starting at 8;30 am Jamaica time.
