Local basketball fraternity mourns passing of Simone Edwards

Former national women's basketball captain Simone Edwards is dead. Edwards who died on Thursday had been ailing for some time with stage 4 ovarian cancer.

She played for the New York Liberty and the Seattle Storm and was the first Jamaican player in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA).

Known as the Jamaican Hurricane, she won the WNBA  Championship title with the Storm in 2004.

The 49 year old also played professional basketball in Europe and Israel. Edwards coached the Jamaican women's national basketball team and led them to a 2014 Caribbean Championship.

On August 6, 2017, Edwards was conferred with the Order of Distinction by the Government of Jamaica.
