Reggae Girlz to stage local camp ahead of World Cup

Local fans will not have a chance to see the senior Reggae Girlz in competition before heading to next month's FIFA World Cup to be jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand.

Head coach Lorne Donaldson told Radio Jamaica Sports several mitigating circumstances, including the date not being in a FIFA window, have resulted in the coaching staff opting not to have a game at home.

However, the Reggae Girlz will assemble in Jamaica starting this weekend for a one week local camp.

Neither the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) nor Donaldson has revealed the players who have been invited to camp.

Donaldson disclosed that some players have not been released by their NWSL clubs in the United States and a decision is to be made on whether to replace them in the training squad.

Following the Jamaica camp, the players will return to their respective bases before heading to another camp in Amsterdam on July 1. The JFF must submit its World Cup squad to FIFA by July 10.

Jamaica, who are appearing at historic and consecutive world tournaments, are drawn in Group "F", with all their group games in Australia, and will face France on July 23, Panama on the 29th and Brazil on August 2.

The FIFA Women's World Cup runs from July 20 to August 20 with New Zealand facing Norway in the opening game in Auckland on July 20 and the final set for the Sydney Olympic Stadium in Australia on August 20.
