Saturday night's incident during which Reggae Boyz head coach Winfried Schafer issued verbal threats and plugged out a camera cable belonging to videographer Delroy Higgins has earned the condemnation of RJR Group's Managing Director Gary Allen. Higgins is employed by the RJR Communications Group.
Allen told RJR Sports he was appalled by coach Schafer's action.
“I think this is absolutely stunning, It’s shameful. I can’t believe that that would be the conduct of someone who is in charge of a national programme and a national team. There is absolutely nothing that can tell someone that it’s ok for them to unplug someone’s equipment. He’s interfering with our equipment and proper journalistic practices,” said Allen.
The RJR boss says the group will await the outcome of the JFF's investigation. JFF President Captain Horace Burrell has requested and received a report on the incident from TVJ Sports and has indicated the federation will investigate the matter.
Meanwhile, the Press Association of Jamaica (PAJ) has written to the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) expressing disappointment at coach Schafer's behaviour.
PAJ President Dionne Jackson-Miller says the organisation regards the coach's action as interference with the work of the media.
“We’ve written to Captain Burrell asking him to deal with this matter. We regard it (his behavior) as unacceptable and totally over the line,” said Jackson-Miller.
