Sunshine Girls dominate opening round of new Suncorp Super League season

In an unprecedented achievement, four Sunshine Girls were named MVP for their respective games as the new season of the Suncorp Super Netball League in Australia got underway last weekend.

In a pulsating rematch of last season's grand finale and the closest game of the round, Sunshine Girl and the world's number one goal-shooter Jhanielle Fowler led defending champions West Coast Fever to a 62-61 victory over the Melbourne Vixens.

Fowler who was voted the game's most valuable player, was perfect from inside the circle with 55 goals from as many attempts.

Another sunshine girl, Jodi-Ann Ward also took the MVP  accolade, making 7 deflections and 4 interceptions, in helping the Collingwood Magpies' to a 71-63 win over the New South Wales Swifts.

Fellow Jamaican Shimona Nelson led the scoring for the Magpies, having also recorded a 100 percent shooting accuracy with 53 goals.

Also copping MVP honours was Shamera Sterling who made 12 deflections, 5 interceptions and 4 rebounds for the Adelaide Thunderbirds to beat the Queensland Firebirds 59-44 on the road.

The 4th Sunshine Girl taking MVP honours was Kadian Dehaney who effected 10 deflections and 4 interceptions for the Sunshine Coast Lightining in their 66-50 win over the Giants.

Meanwhile, Sterling, Ward, Nelson and Latanya Wilson were the Sunshine Girls who made the team of the week.

Round 2 will be contested on Saturday morning Jamaica time.
