Missy Elliot and Prince statues proposed to replace Confederate monuments in the US
To replace Confederate and other controversial monuments representing figures who have harmed people of colour throughout American history, many are requesting celebrity statues to be built in their place.
Missy Elliott’s fans have already formed a petition to have the hip-hop artiste commemorated with a statue in Portsmouth, Virginia.
Now, Prince might be getting his own.
Launched by Minnesota native Wintana Melekin, the petition to replace a Christopher Columbus statue with one of the Minnesota icons already has 4,221 signatures out of its goal of 5,000.
The petition in part read that they do not believe that Columbus represents the values Minnesotans carry.
"Rather than glorify a man who wanted to extinguish Black and Native peoples, they should honor members of the community whose leadership we find inspirational; ie Prince," it read.
His estate is yet to comment.
