Jack Harlow, Lil Nas X, Kendrick Lamar top MTV VMA nominees

Rappers Lil Nas X, Jack Harlow, and Kendrick Lamar are the top nominees for this year's VMAs.

The three hip-hop stars tied for the lead with seven nominations each and will face off in the Best Visual Effects and Best Direction categories. 

Doja Cat is the top female nominee with six nods, tying with Harry Styles.

Billie Eilish, Drake, Dua Lipa, Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, and The Weeknd received five nods each, while K-Pop band BTS is the most nominated group or duo, with four nods.

For the first time in the show's 39-year history, MTV has expanded the number of nominees for its top award, video of the year, to seven.

It also added a new category: best metaverse performance.

Fans have until August 19 to vote for their favorites across 22 gender-neutral categories by visiting vote.mtv.com. 

The 2022 VMAs will be held on Sunday, August 28, live from the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.
