Killing Archie

News emerging on Tuesday of the imminent ‘death’ of a fictional character has apparently sent fans into mourning, even before the tragic ‘act’ takes place.

The creators of the series, Life With Archie, featuring red headed Archie Andrews, have disclosed that Archie will be ‘killed off” when he “sacrifices himself for a friend.”

Archie and his friends Veronica, Jughead Betty and Reggie have been around in comic strips since 1941 and will live on in other series, but in the five year-old “Life With Archie,” the lead character will die valiantly saving a friend in issue #36. The series will end with his friends mourning his passing and celebrating his life in the 37thissue. The series has been running since 2010.

The “killing” will  coincide with the 75th anniversary of Archie Comics, but, according to a CNN report, the creators have stressed that the conclusion of the "Life With Archie" series won’t affect the rest of the "Archie" titles.

"Well, it was hard decision, there's no doubt about it. It's not something we took lightly," Jon Goldwater, Archie Comics CEO told MTV News.

He added: "We made the decision that in this universe, in the 'Life With Archie' universe, the way for it end, and end in a manner that's consistent with 75 years of what Archie is all about, and what he stands for. The way to do that was for Archie to die."
