American rapper DMX has died at the age of 50.
His family made the announcement in a statement on Friday.
DMX, whose given name is Earl Simmons, passed away at White Plains Hospital in New York after being placed on life support for the last few days.
The rapper had been hospitalised since last week when he suffered a heart attack at his home as a result of a drug overdose.
DMX began his rap career in the 1990s and released his debut album, It's Dark and Hell Is Hot, in 1998.
He became one of the main stars of hardcore hip hop and was the front-runner of the Ruffhouse Records label.
His single, Ruff Ryders Anthem, helped to seal his critical and commercial success.
DMX made his film debut in 2000's Romeo Must Die, starring Jet Li and the late Aaliyah.
He went on to star in a number of memorable films including Exit Wounds and Cradle 2 the Grave.
Over the years, he had found himself in trouble with the law over weapons, drugs and tax evasion.
