The Bank of Jamaica is reporting that the assets of the financial system - commercial banks, merchant banks and building societies - climbed 10 per cent to $3.1 trillion in December last year compared with December of 2024.
The commercial banks had the largest share with $2.8 trillion - while the building societies accounted for $233 billion, followed by the merchant banks with $7.7 billion.
Meanwhile the total deposits in the system increased by 11 per cent to $2.2 trillion compared with December 2024.
Total commercial bank deposits amounted to $2.1 trillion; followed by the building societies with $181.2 billion and the merchant banks with $2.2 billion.
Non-performing loans rose 9 per cent to $44 billion in December last year, while the total loan loss provisions increased by 13 per cent to $47 billion.
