Three men suspected to be members of a Kingston-based criminal gang linked to contract killings, extortion and robberies, were fatally shot during a police operation in St. James on Thursday.
Radio Jamaica News was informed that about 11 p.m. Thursday, members of a police team conducted an intelligence-led operation at a property on Coral Terrace, Coral Gardens, St. James.
The team went to an apartment building where it was said that armed men were staying.
During a reported confrontation with the police, three men were shot.
They were taken to Cornwall Regional Hospital where they were pronounced dead.
Another suspect was detained.
Two illegal guns were seized.
The cops also seized three bullet proof vests and the shirt of a police uniform in the apartment.
Investigators say the men are members of the Spanglers Gang, based in West Kingston.
The dead men have been identified by their aliases Cardon, Don Hype and David Facey, all of Kingston addresses.
The gang is known for contract killings, shootings, extortion, robberies and other gun-related crimes.
Investigators say they have picked up intelligence that the suspects had travelled from Kingston to St. James with the intention of carrying out robberies within the division.
The cops say Coral Gardens and its environs have a number of Airbnbs which are often utilised as hideouts by criminals.
Some 47 fatal police shootings have been recorded since the start of the new year.
