ATL Automotive Group is now the exclusive distributor of the BYD electric vehicle line.
The company made the announcement on Monday morning.
Adam Stewart, Executive Chairman of the ATL Group, says the multi-million dollar investment to become the regional master dealer for the Chinese brand comes at a strategic time.
"We've launched six brands, only one of them is a hybrid. The hybrids will eventually fade away over the next two to three years and be 100% EV. They create what we believe is a new segment. Many brands, many different models," he announced.
Mr. Stewart said the lineup will include passenger vehicles, buses, trucks, forklifts, and ATL Appliances will also be representing BYD's solar panel product portfolio.
The first showroom the BYD electric vehicle line will be in St. Andrew on the compound of the AC Mariott Hotel.
"We spent a couple of million dollars on the initial stock, which will get to us by October. And then behind that, the showrooms will start, which, you know, estimated somewhere in the region of US$3-4 million of physical build out in showrooms in Jamaica, between MoBay and Kingston," he said.
ATL will also sell BYD vehicles in nine other Caribbean countries, including Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados and the Cayman Islands.
Up to 14 dealerships could be established in the coming months.
Before this deal, BYD was being distributed locally by the Stewart's Automotive Group, in a partnership with Flash Motors.
