Satellite-based Global Positioning System (GPS) navigation equipment will have to be installed by Caribbean Airlines Limited (CAL) on two Boeing 767 aircraft to be leased by the company.
Trinidad's Finance Minister, Larry Howai, has admitted that the planes are without the equipment, but did not give an estimated cost.
Caribbean Airlines Limited plans to install the GPS systems on the aircraft when they undergo major maintenance during the latter half of next year.
The planes were previously used for routes overland from Chile to New York and have Inertial Reference System (IRS), as opposed to GPS.
IRS is a system used to determine one’s location without reference to external factors.
