Attorney-at-law Christopher Dunkley
Businessman Sean Azan has taken Member of Parliament Duane Smith to court over an outstanding debt.
Mr. Azan refiled a claim in the Supreme Court against the St. Andrew North Western MP, seeking to recover millions of dollars allegedly owed to him.
This development was disclosed Wednesday following an in-chambers hearing related to a previous lawsuit on the matter. Mr. Azan's attorney Christopher Dunkley said the outstanding sum was over $20 million.
Speaking with the media after the hearing, Mr. Dunkley confirmed that his client has discontinued the earlier claim.
"It's a private matter between Mr. Smith and Mr Azan. But in the action that Mr. Azan took against Mr. Smith, Mr. Smith has opposed it on the basis that he says he was in served originally with the claim. Mr. Azan has refiled another claim, and we've discontinued the one that he says he wasn't served with. We have decided not to have an argument in court about that. We just focus on what Mr. Azan has come to court for, which is to recover monies loaned to Mr. Smith," said the attorney.
He did not disclose the period during which the personal loan was issued, but noted that prior to the matter reaching the courts, there appear to have been repayment attempts.
