Telecommunications company Digicel on Friday took aim at a bigger share of the internet market with the launch of its 4G wireless broadband internet service.
The company, which has been offering the service to business customers since 2007, launched the service to residential customers, after a $2 billion investment.
The launch comes in the midst of a recession in which most consumers are cutting back on spending, but Digicel says it believes its new service will actually help the economy.
Still, it refused to divulge how it believes the new service will perform.
The company said the wireless technology will initially cover 60% of Jamaica, or 410,000 households.
The hope is that the roll-out will be as successful with consumers, as their mobile launch nine years ago was.
