The St. Ann Police are seeking to reassure residents of Watt Town that they are cooperating with the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) in its probe of a fatal shooting by an off-duty officer last month.

The killing of O'Neil Watson - otherwise called Derron - on Ash Wednesday, February 18, sparked a demonstration by residents who expressed anger at the police's account of the incident.

The report said the constable was defending himself against a threat.

It was alleged that the shooting stemmed from a love triangle.

Senior Superintendent Carlos Russell, Commanding Officer for the St. Ann Police Division, said the police have been maintaining a presence in Watt Town through the Community Safety and Security Branch.

"I know that the incident would have brought some form of tension in the community. We are working through our Community Safety and Security Branch with other agency to provide counselling and mediation in the area. We have also beefed up the patrol in the space, and we are encouraging persons that they are to cooperate with the police and whatever information they have, they need to pass it on to the INDECOM body as also to us so that the investigation can go on smoothly. What we don't want is further violence," he urged.
