The Factories Corporation of Jamaica (FCJ) says it receives requests for more than a million square feet of space, annually.
Managing Director of the Corporation, Dr. Donald Farquharson, says the entity has about five projects at varying levels of completion to meet demand for factory and business services space.
He says significant headway has been made in the Garmex redevelopment project which forms a part of the expansion process.
The project is estimated at J$4 billion.
"So we are in the process of building 14 new buildings. We have concluded four buildings at 90,000 sq ft and I can tell you before they were constructed, they were taken. We have another 36,000 sq ft that are solely for small businesses. Those are supposed to be delivered in the first quarter of next year and then there beyond, we have a 5.7 acres of property, which we expect to build another six warehouses. So in total, we are looking at about 60,000 sq ft of space to be developed at Garmex and at this point we are about 50 per cent there," he said.
Other projects under development by the FCJ are the Morant Bay Urban Centre, Boundbrooke in Port Antonio, Naggo Head Tech Park, St. Catherine and an agro park at Hayes in Clarendon.
