Finance Minister Dr. Nigel Clarke has hailed as historic, the number of people currently in the Jamaican labour force.
With the Statistical Institute of Jamaica (STATIN) reporting a 4.5 per cent unemployment rate as at April, the Finance Minister welcomed it as "unprecedented."
He was quick to admit however that "this is not a panacea," noting that "times are still challenging."
Nevertheless, he said it was of great significance that "there are more persons employed in Jamaica today than at any previous time in our history."
According to STATIN's report, there are currently 1.312 million people employed in Jamaica.
This, Dr Clarke noted, is the first time that Jamaica has surpassed 1.3 million mark for the number of persons employed in the country, characterising it as "a tremendous policy success."
STATIN's Director-General, Carol Coy, in her report on Tuesday, revealed that there had been a 3.4 per cent increase in the employed labour force year over year, and that there had also been an expansion in the overall labour pool.
There were 1,373,800 people in the labour force, an increase increase of 1.7%, "primarily as a result of an increase in the number of females in the labour force," she reported.
She reported that the number of persons employed in April 2023 increased by 43,300 (3.4%), compared to April 2022.
Females accounted for more than two-thirds of this increase, she added, revealing that "employed females grew by by 5.1 per cent... while employed males grew by two per cent..."
