Five more countries join BRICS

By Javaughn Keyes

Five more countries have joined the BRICS trade bloc.

The group, led by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, now includes Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Iran, and Ethiopia.

These nations joined the bloc, days after it was announced by Argentina's new President, Javier Milei, that his country had dropped its plan to enter the expanding BRICS club.

An ambassador says the 16th BRICS summit later this year could also see up to 20 more developing countries being inducted.

The alliance appears to be assembling a series of nations that are willing to ditch the US dollar.

The Brics countries are often seen as a counterweight to the Western-led world.

Although the BRICS alliance is often portrayed as promoting a more multipolar world, in economic terms it is dominated by China, which accounts for more than 70 per cent of the bloc's combined GDP.
