Increase GCT on phone cards - NDM

President of the National Democratic Movement (NDM) Earl Delisser has put forward an alternative tax measure that he says will rake in a portion of the money needed to plug the hole in the country's 2009/2010 budget.

Mr. Delisser who was speaking Sunday on RJR's weekly news review programme "That's a Wrap" , said the Government should increase the present 20% General Consumption Tax (GCT) on phone cards.

According to him, some Jamaicans already talk too much, and so therefore pay to do so.

"The Jamaican people talk too much. We spend so much time on cellular phones which is non productive because we basically we're not speaking about businesses and so on and I believe that if the Government was to look at in a practical way, the business of cell phones and to increase the tax on it, then it must come at a price.

"I think this is an untapped area where the Government could get increased revenue," said Mr. Delisser.
