Jamaica Stock Exchange ended July with robust performance

The Jamaica Stock Exchange ended July on a strong note, with the main market index rising 5.7 per cent during the month and 21.2 per cent over the last year.

Market capitalization also increased by just over six per cent to more than J$2 trillion.

Among the best-performing stocks in July were MPC Caribbean Clean Energy, up more than 52 per cent, TransJamaican Highway, which gained 28 per cent, and Carreras, which climbed almost 27 per cent. NCB Financial also posted a strong monthly gain of 21 per cent.

Trading activity was also higher. The market recorded more than 33,000 transactions in July, a 67 per cent increase in comparison with July last year.

The value of ordinary trades rose to J$4.4 billion, up more than 36 per cent year over year.

However, performance was mixed across market segments.

The Junior Market Index declined 3.6 per cent in July and was down 15.2 per cent, compared with a year earlier.

The USD Equities Market was the strongest performer, jumping 21.2 per cent in July and 42 per cent over the last year.

The July results reflect continued investor interest in several blue-chip and infrastructure-related stocks, helping to drive gains in the JSE's main market.
