The return of increased production at the Clarendon-based Jamalco Alumina refinery has significantly boosted the country's mining & quarrying industry.
The Statistical Institute of Jamaica (STATIN) says the segment grew by 114.7 per cent in the first quarter, due to higher production of alumina.
Alumina production grew by 197 per cent to 307,000, up from 103,000 tonnes in the first quarter of 2022.
The Jamalco plant was closed in the comparable period of 2022 after a fire.
The increased production also pushed up the volume of alumina exported.
The bauxite by-product saw a 214 per cent increase in exports, to 271,000 tonnes in the first quarter versus the similar period last year.
The production of crude bauxite however declined by 33 per cent, to 428,000 tonnes, compared with 641,000 tonnes last year.
