The Jamaica Business Development Corporation (JBDC) says it is taking steps to ensure Jamaica generates more foreign exchange from the US$20 billion global essential oils market.
These steps include the testing of over 30 different plant materials during the last two years with a view to extracting essential oils.
Essential oils are used in the production of soaps and cosmetics, but local producers of these products import 90% of the raw materials used.
The EU dominates the production of essential oils with 43% of total output last year, but acting CEO of the JBDC, Harold Davis, says Jamaica is undergoing a learning process.
