The Jamaica Public Service Company, JPS, has selected Spanish firm Abengoa, as the preferred bidder to build its 190 megawatt Combined Cycle plant.
JPS says Abengoa was selected through a competitive tender process, with the assistance of international consulting firm, AMEC Foster Wheeler. Once contracted, Abengoa will be responsible for the design, engineering and construction work on the plant.
The 190 megawatt plant will be built close to JPS’ existing power station in Old Harbour Bay, which is scheduled to be retired by 2018. This follows the recent announcement by Cabinet that U.S. based New Fortress Energy has been selected as the preferred bidder to supply gas to the plant.
The use of gas is aimed at permanently reducing the cost of energy to Jamaicans.
