Industry Minister Anthony Hylton says the Trade Marks Act is to be amended to protect the name “Jamaica” from use by foreign businesses, for trademarks and domain names that do not originate in the island. It will take advantage of the goodwill and international recognition of the Jamaican brand.
Speaking yesterday at the launch of Intellectual Property Week, Mr. Hylton said the amendments will also allow for the registration of trademarks in multiple countries through one centralised application procedure. This is essential to Jamaica’s accession to the Madrid Protocol.
