Long standing Iberostart dispute before IDT

Lawyers representing the management of the Iberostar Rose Hall Beach Hotel in St. James on Monday began making submissions before the Industrial Disputes Tribunal, IDT in their long-standing dispute with the University and Allied Workers Union, (UAWU).

The groups have been at odds over the dismissal of more than two thousand employees since August last year .

According to Clifton Grant, UAWU Vice President, the groups will go before the IDT panel again on November 29, 30 and December 1.

It is expected that by then the management will complete its submissions and the union  will proceed in  presenting its case in which they will maintain that the workers were unjustifiably terminated and should be reinstated.

Last year, the management of the hotel closed down operations citing a downturn in the global economy.

As a result, the positions of all the employees in the bargaining unit represented by the UAWU were made redundant.

The hotel has since  reopened but none of the former employees have reportedly been rehired.
