MS Monarch to dock in Port of Kingston

The cruise vessel MS Monarch will make an unscheduled visit to the Port of Kingston today, making it the second time in a year that the ship is stopping in Kingston.

The vessel, formerly known as Monarch of  the Seas and operated under Royal Caribbean's Pullmantur Brand, called on Kingston on December 6 last year.

The ship will dock with 1,953 passengers.

William Tatha, Vice President, Cruise Shipping and Marina Operations at the Port Authority of  Jamaica, says the MS Monarch was originally slated to call on Montego Bay but had to be diverted because of  the weather situation in the western city.

At the time she was launched in 1991, Monarch was one of  the largest ships in the world.

The vessel also has the distinction of being the first ever major cruise ship to have a female captain.
